Tram Services
Melbourne has one of the largest tram and light rail networks in the world. The city's first tram began operating in 1884, which was a horse drawn carriage on a suburban line. Cable trams were introduced the following year, and Melbourne had its first electric tram in 1889.
The Victorian Government has a collection of operational trams dating from 1906, preserved for museum exhibitions or available for use on special occasions. Melbourne has just placed in operation the modern streamlined low-floor classed trams that are great for providing access to wheelchairs.
